wonderful day

Had a wonderful day today-Daughter Kathy picked us up & we went to daughter Cheryl's for our family christmas-So good to see all the daughters, Cheryl Jan & Kathy and family together, except daughter Sandi-Also saw Michelle, Karl & Amy, plus some of the great grandchildren-So wonderful at this age to get together, eat and visit-Lots of stories told of the past & always something new we haven't heard before-
Evelyn came along, even though not feeling to good yet-She still has some pneumonia in her right lung & harder yet for her to breath-
Yesterday Ev's family from Binghamton were here, so we are slowly getting thru Christmas-Only two of her daughters to get together with yet sometime this week-Very tiring at this age, but fun to see them all-Jan took some nice pictures which are on her snapfish site & I just looked at them-

Hard to believe

It was 26 years ago yesterday, that I retired from the Post Office in 1982-Stayed til Christmas Eve, so I could get all the presents from my customers ( greed )-Always got a lot of goodies and gifts-
Now it is Christmas 2008 & I am still here ( amazing )-Did do many other jobs in the 26 years, but none I enjoyed more than the P.O.-I've now been retired within a few years of the years I worked-
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Busy day-Washing this a.m.-Grocery shopping-Helped Ev finish her Christmas wrappings-About 4 inches of snow-
Fixed salmon patties, coleslaw & steamed vegetables for dinner-Wanted to watch a Syracuse basketball game, but wasn't televised, so finished the night reading a book-Try to read a book a week, which helps my old mind-Tomorrow we head out early for Rochester Hospital & hope to be home before dark-
Put a Christmas card on all the 11 other apartments in the building today-Took a box of goodies down to the apartment office & the mailman is taken care of, so guess ready for Christmas & come what may-
JUST DON'T FORGET YOUR MAILPERSON AND PAPER BOY-

Haven't written on my blog in a while, so will atempt some words. Just finished dinner & know if I go read I will be asleep in a short time.
Got a lot of odd things done today. Went thru the filing cabinet and cleaned out some things there. Also went thru a box of old tax records & got rid of things in there. I only keep things as far as taxes for seven years, except for anything to do with sale of property. Was taught that when I took tax courses years ago & guess it still holds true.
Also cleaned out our Med records for the year, but can't put them away til after the end of the year. Ev especially has tons of papers in her record file and book. Then mopped the kitchen and bathroom floors, so am kinda wiped out.
Snow melting some today, but still kinda cold. Yesterday got my Christmas all done, which is so hard as you get older.
Was thinking of one Christmas years ago when I was 12. A small hotel & gas station in the village had burned & out in back was a small storage shed where they put things that were still okay. Several boxes were of Fire Works, which could be sold in stores back then. Down the street I had an older friend 15 & he talked me into using my sled to go get some of those fireworks, as lots of snow on the ground. He got them out the window of the shed & I dragged the sled down the back street to my Dad's old barn. Dumb him ( the 15 year old ) and poor little me we left the shed tracks all the way.
To make the story short the police found where they were & who took them. This fifteen year old kids father was a detective in Ithaca also. Anyway that was the end of my friendship with that guy.
Had to go before the town Judge & my sentence was to stay in after school for six months & to go to sunday school every sunday for one year. ( This was a good lesson learned & don't get led by your elders ) .
Okay enough for now-

Nuttin much

Have been kinda busy today-Did a couple loads of wash & dry-Went to Staples to get ink for my printer-Made some more Christmas cards-Made cookies tonight & allready ate three-
Had to get a new cell phone yesterday, as ours gave out-Only about six months since Jan & George gave it to us, so was a free new one-
Ev got in touch with her Vascular surgeon today-His nurse called later & they will do a cat scan on the 31st-Then she will see the surgeon the same day-More blockage in the neck area, where the by-pass hooks onto the main artery-He will then decide if safe to do anymore surgery-we will pray he can do something, as things are getting worse with her-
Got some Christmas stuff out & sorted-Will get rid of some stuff that we no longer use-Not too much into Christmas this year with all of Ev's problems-
Have a good night everybody-

Day After

Friday & everbody out shopping I imagine-I went to Wegmans & hardly anyone there, which is amazing-So I guess the Christmas shoppers aren't after groceries.
Had a nice visit with Sandi today-Could hear Jenna in the background-Sure wish I could be around those two girls some as they grow-
Not doing much else-Reading and watched a Syracuse basketball game, which they won-I tend to read at least a book a week, if I can stay awake-Guess thats good for my old mind, as i get older-
Gas down to $2.01 here today-I think Sandi said about $1.50 there-That sure helps on the old pensioner, even though I don't go far anymore-
Okay everybody that reads this have a good weekend-

Navy Days

The girls yesterday brought me a picture of a brick with my name on it they had placed at the Sampson Navy Base museum. It is in the walk there and will have to go see it when the museum opens up again in the spring.
I spent many weeks of intense training there in 1944, during a very cold winter. After basics I spent another 12 weeks there in Electrical school. after graduating from there I became what they all jokingly called a bulb snatcher. Then on to SanFrancisco & the war in the Pacific. A great & little scary experience for a 17 year old kid, but also a good lesson in life.
While at Sampson in Basic, I was not suppose to leave the base at any time. My neighbor & family friend back home was the civilian Police Chief on the base. He came down to the barracks one day, found me and asked if I would like to go home for the night. He fixed it up with my Commander & I got on the floor of the back seat of his car & out the gate we went. He being who he was did not have to stop at the gate, just salute and drive on thru. That was a treat that I'm sure few ever had & none of my buddies questioned it, but were only happy for me living so close to the base.
The whole War experience was something you never forget. I spent a good deal of time in the Phillipine Islands, especially after the war was over. That also a great experience, as the part I was in was quite backwards & had some wonderful experiences with the natives and there families. One family I got to know had a daughter who spoke English & taught younger children there. I spent a lot of my free time with her family & always regreted not keeping in touch with them.
One other qick note-Coming from a village of 750 people, I ran into three old buddies while in the Phillipines & spent some time with them. Such a small world I thought at the the time.

Wonderful Day

Cheryl, Jan, Kathy & George all here today to celebrate my birthday. Can't believe I made it to 81. I know I don't deserve to have made it, but thank the GOOD LORD for this gift of life.
We had a very nice lunch & a good visit. Quite a snowy day, so glad they got here safely & home safely. Just felt so good to have three of my four girls here and see them visit and laugh. That was the best present a Dad could have.
Cried today when I read Jan's last night Blog. It was so wonderful & well written. I'm a lucky man to have such wonderful children-Just called everyone and they got home safe & sound-

A lazy day & not feeling to hot-Had purchased a turkey at Wegmans for 39 cents a pound, so we cooked that today-After having some for dinner we packaged the rest in meal size packages & put in freezer-Makes about a week of real cheap meals-
Still not comfortable with the med changes & have some funny feelings at times-Hope it goes away soon-
Ev had a call from Vascular surgeon in Rochester today-He doesn't want anyone else, as they had talked about doing any thing with her, but will study her tests and get back to her. He is in NY City this week so it will be another week or so before a decision on what to do next-Very hard on her & some tears, all this wondering and waiting-
I got a call from Med Supply place where we have done business for years-They want me to come in friday morning to take part in a T-V commercial for thier business-I will be glad to do it, as they have been very good and helpful to us over the years-
Kathy coming for lunch tomorrow & guess whats for lunch ( Turkey ) & maybe turkey soup-

Med week

Another trip to Rochester yesterday-Ev had to see the Vascular surgeon-They wanted to maybe do another reverse by-pass down the right side, as other part is plugged-Said because of all her problems, breathing and so on chances aren't good for survival-She said no thanks, she will live with the pain & discomfort & at least keep living for now-Guess I don't blame her-They were going to call today, but didn't about some other procedure ?
Anyway a busy medical week-Hope things get better, instead of worser-Had trouble with printer tonight & had to delete it and re-install-Hate these modern things at times & love them other times-
Getting late so off to bed-Thanks Morgan for your comment & I LOVE YOU TOO-

yesterday

Very tired from yesterday.Went to Neurologist in Rochester, as new meds he gave me for siezures was giving some bad problems. Guess a waste of time as he just said nothing else he could do & put me back on original script. Thats the one I have seizures once in a while. said I would have to live with it & watch myself. Not sure I like this Doctor too much, but the second one I've tried & think they are all a little nuts.
After there we had some Chinese lunch & then to Target to look at T-V's. Ours is 17 years old, so time for a new one. Couldn'treally afford it but got a magnavox 32 inch. This will be our Christmas to each other.
Ev didn't get out of the car after lunch. So I did the rest of shopping on my own including the T-V. It hurts her to walk much. She goes back to Rochester on Wenesday to the Vascular surgeon to see if the by-pass is plugged any more. Probably is as each time it gets worse. Nothing more they can do it sounds like. She also goes back to Rochester on the 20th for a spinal injection, which does help her some with her pain. This Rochest trips are the first I have been out of town in a couple months. Seems good but tiring.
Enough of Med problems-All you out there have a wonderful day-

this & that

Just thinking about bed, as am tired tonite. Not sure why, as I took a nice nap this afternoon. Real nice day & got out for an hour this noon.
Next week we go to Rochester twice to Doctors. Not looking forward to the trip as I get older, but can do it. Monday I go to Dr.Stanton a nuerologist I have been to before, as I am having some bad side effects from meds he prescribed. Hope he can straighten that out.
Wenesday I take Ev to her Vascular Doctor who did her by-pass. Last time they found a lot of 100% blockage in it & will probably do ultra sound to see if any worse. She is having a lot of pain lately. It takes us just one & three quarter hours to get there from here, so a long trip for us, but worth the good doctors up there.
My back is better but still hurts when I walk, or try to lay on my right side. Try to do my therapy each day that they showed me to do. I couldn't do anything for three weeks or more which drove me crazy.
Glad the election is over & hope things work out better for the country. It has gone on too long with all the T-V stuff. I use to be chairman of the town of Covert Republican party & very involved in Seneca County politics. Now I am a registered Independent & strickly vote for the person, not what party they belong to. I worry about the future of this country the way things are right now

Slipping

Just realized I haven' written on my Blog site in several weeks-I have been kinda laid up, so that is my reason-Back & meds giving me a hard time, but I'm tough so will survive-
Nothing much going on, because of the above-Finally got so I could drive after three weeks so that is a treat-I think someday that will be the hardest thing to give up-Remember my father had to-
Ev has her 70th birthday tomorrow-She doesn't want to celebrate, so maybe out to dinner-She is just a kid compared to me-Sun shining today, but kinda cold, so staying in-
we had only 32 kids for trick or treating-This is way down from usual-I will now have to eat up the candy-Have lost about 14 pounds from being down and not eating, so would like to leave it off-
Okay really nothing more to write about, so will try more soon as life gets more exciting-Hey that one sentence has three mores in it-

Laughing & Crying

Both Evelyn & I are hurting bad-She has been for some time & I just thru mine out-What I laughed about was last night she was walking with her walker as usual & here I come behind her with my cane-i thought boy are we two old people ready for the Nursing Home-
Anyway today the good old moist heating pad is helping some & tuesday she goes to Rochester to try to get help-This specialist before said he couldn't do any more for her & she has tried several other spine Doctors, so doesn't sound good, but hope someone can relieve her some-
A very typical Fall day-Cool and lots of rain on & off-No heat on yet but thinking about it tonight-
Really enjoyed Jan's last Blog-She always has some nice pictures with hers-I haven't learned yet how to put the pictures in yet-
Evelyn getting dinner right now-It is very hard for her, but she likes to try sometimes-I enjoy cooking, so do it most of the time-Looking forward to the Vice Presidents debate tonight, as it should be very interesting-

This Week

A busy week-At Wegman's grocery store on thursday & got back into on the right side of car by a 84 year old lady- Got estimates and about $850 damage-Have an appointment to get it fixed on Oct. 6th-Nationwide will pay most of it, less our deductable-Driveable, but doesn't look to good-
Kathy & Gary here for dinner today & then we played some cards ( pitch )-Kathy brought a whole bunch of coupons which she collects from work & I am just going thru them-Really use them a lot and at the price of food today they help a lot-The economy doesn't look good & don't know what will happen with us poor folks, grew up in the depression, so can handle, just have to change our ways-
Go to doctors on monday to get check up & talk about new seizure meds I'm taking-Got a note today from Doctors to come on Ocyt.11th to get our flu shots-

Busy weekend

Got thru the weekend, but very tired yet today-Took Ev to Doctors at Highland Hospital on friday, a spine doctor-After looking at the MRI pics & explaining them to us, he said nothing much he could do for her-He did give her a shot in the bursa, below the right hip-Said her lower back was not good and cushions pretty well gone in most of that area-He thought this was causing all the pain-Said she could take more of the pain pills than she was taking-Not good news, as it sounds like she will have to live with it-
At least I got her there and back safely-Always worry about that, as a long trip with my problems-
Saturday Kathy took us to the Windmill in Pen Yann-I rented a wheelchair for Ev & we got thru most of it-A very large crowd there-Spent some time visiting with Grand-daughter Michelle at her booth she has there-Very hard pushing the wheelchair thru it & Kathy did most of that-Good to see it all, as it has been several years since being there-
Went by Brother David's place on our way-Quite a bit of wind damage there from the tail end of the hurricane-Goofing off today, just laundry & returned the wheelchair-Quite cool here and a sweatshirt on for the first time since spring-Also have a belly ache ( to much candy )

Thursday, September 18, 2008

Haven't written on this in a while, so will atempt some thoughts-Out today to Bank, Post Office, Med Supply, & gas station-Gas is $3.79 here today-Tomorrow I take Ev to Rochester to another specialist-This one is an Orthopedic Doctor at Highland hospital-Haven't been there since Phyllis was there in 1962-
Ev had an MRI & local Doctor can't help her problem, so hopefully this one can-She is in a lot of pain and can't sleep, even with her strong pain pills-It is a long way from here to Rochester, but the Doctors there are keeping her alive, so well worth the trip-I do still have some trouble with my siezures, so try to be very careful driving-They are trying a new med for them, but not up to strength yet-
Kathy called and wants to take us to the Windmill in Pen Yann on saturday, if Ev can handle it-If we do I will take the wheel chair-Michelle has a place there & would love to see it-
We are looking for a new apartment, a place where she can walk right in with her walker-So hard for her to do the steps up to our three bedroom here-I put in an application at a nice complex this morning-Hard to believe this complex of over 300 apartments doesn't have a first floor walk in-
Okay everyone have a good day and weekend-Love Dad/Grampa/Uncle/Friend

Weekend

Quite a weekend-Jan, George, Rebecca & Mellisa here on saturday-The girls brought us Quizno's subs & we had a good visit-Brought there dog who was very good and behaved well-So good to see them all-Sunday Ev's grand-daughter & boyfriend came for dinner & I made spaghetti & my special sauce-Susan & daughter also showed up & ate with us-Was pooped that night as kitchen hot, but glad to see everybody-Had to call cops sunday night, as a stranger in our parking lot for several nights and making a mess out there-They came about 12:30 & took care of things-Something about the guy being on parole on the cops radio, we could hear on his radio with his door open-Interesting place we live in here-

having a time

Have been having a time trying to get on my blog for the past few days-Finally sucess & now I can't remember what I wanted to write-
Tried to call Jan a few minutes ago to see how she was doing, but no luck getting her-Guess they told her it wouldtake a while before feeling herself again-
Will call Katie in a bit, as her birthday & must sing to her-Wish things were so I could see her, as she is growing fast-Can't believe how fast all the grandchildren & even great grandchildren are growing-Would be wonderful to be around when they grow up, for college, marriage and all that stuff-Guess thats asking a little much though-
Went to Davids little country summer home on sunday & checked it out-Everything seems to be okay-I picked one tomatoe that was almost ripe while there-He went back to Florida early before his tomatoes & grapes were ready-I try to get out there at least once a month to check on the place for him-While out that way stopped at Kathy's & they gave us some garden stuff, which is always good & thankful for-
Ev not having to good of days lately, but keeps pushing herself to keep going-I brought the walker up out of the car, for her to use getting around easier-
Rebecca's friend Mellisa comes to Horseheads tomorrow & they said they might get up this way, so hope they do-Can't believe the summer is almost over & very cool nights for sleeping-
Have a good night all of my family out there & be HAPPY-"Love from Me"

Two good days

Yesterday & today were very enjoyable-Started out yesterday morning & drove to Ovid, where we had a good visit with Daughter Cheryl at her Five Star bank there-Then on to my 63rd high school reunion luncheon at Wagner's winery on Seneca lake-So good to see some of my old class mates & childhood girl friends-Some do look very old & some not well, but to be expected at the age of 80 & 81-Only about ten or so left out of the class-
After the luncheon went on to Horseheads to visit daughter Jan who is celebrating her birthday today & has just gotten out of the hospital from an operation-She was still in a lot of pain we could tell & we didn't stay to long to tire her-Her daughter Rebecca there for a couple weeks to help her out-Anyway was good to see her & her family, even though I think they thought I should not have driven that far ( 150 mile round trip )-I try to be very careful as I know I am getting old & have some problems-haven't been to thier house in a long, long time-
Today I had a doctors appointment to try to solve a medicine problem- Had been to a specialist at Strong Hospital in Rochester & he had sent my local doctor some ideas on changing my meds-It is very complicated the way they are going to do it and will take a couple months to accomplish, with no guarenties-Had the best visit I have ever had with my doctor & she spent lots of time with me today-After our talks today I believe she has a better understanding of my life-Doctor in rochester said he thought I should see a physciatrist ( spelling-? )-After our talk today she says no need for that-Anyway a good couple days & feel like I have accomplished some things-
I know the time is coming when I can't drive much, but I have learned in life you can't have everything-I also as I get older believe in living each day at a time & am very thankful for each day-

Jobs

Maybe not to interesting, but was thinking of all the jobs I have had in my lifetime-

Mowed lawns and raked lawns at twelve or thirteen, ( Up to a quarter for each )-
In the winter those years shoveled lots of walks & cleaned out in front of the firehouse when it snowed-
Delivered Ithaca paper in Interlaken & then at Interlaken & Bergen beach in the summer-
Worked as a soda jerk in Wicke's Pharmacy some and at Burketts restaurant next door at the age of fourteen-
Worked at the Interlaken Canning factory one summer and worked another summer at Martin's Grocery store in town ( dollar a day & dollar & a half on saturdays )-
Worked at T'burg bowling alley some nights & hitch hiked back and forth-
After being a electrician in the Navy & finishing school, I worked some with a welder & learn a little of that-
Did some carpenter work with local carpenters part time-
Worked for Getman's Gas company in Ovid doing service work on appliances & doing deliveries, for two years-
Worked 32 years as a Rural carrier for the Post office, actually two years as a clerk before getting the carrier job-
Owned a restaurant for a couple years-
Sold real Estate for O'domerick Realty in Ovid after I retired-
Worked for B & P Supply Hardware Lumber company part time for five years after I retired from Post Office-
Also worked part time doing maintenance at apartment complexes where I lived later in life-Along with all this I found time to be on the Village Board & School Board for a number of years-
Also built my first house from scratch & a cottage at the lake, plus remodeled other houses-
Probably missed something along the way, but did have a busy life ( where did all the money go, as today I live month to month )-
Oh well I learned a lot & had a lot of interesting experiences & have a bunch of memories, as I sit in my easy chair & grow old-

wenesday night

Just talked to Jan & she will have her operation tomorrow instead of the 20th at noon she said. I wish her well & will try to call her at the hospital later tomorrow. She said she will have 6 weeks off to recoup, so will hope to see her, as her birtjhday is tuesday.
Went to Ithaca yesterday for a luncheon with Dorothy Wickes and family for her 100th birthday. She was pretty good being in her wheelchair all the time. Her mind was a little less sharp than last time I saw her in the nursing home, but not bad for 100. They brought her in her wheelchair to the restaurant in the county Scat Van & picked her up that way two hours later. Had a nice lunch and good visit. Took a bunch of pictures. Made out okay driving that far and back, even though very hard now.
Tomorrow Ev's brother-in-law is coming for lunch. He is husband of her younger sister who died two years ago tomorrow. Will be good to see him, as it is hard to get to his house for us anymore.
Again we wish the best to Jan tomorrow & will be thinking of her. She said on the phone Rebecca is coming up from North Carolina this weekend to stay a couple weeks with them. Also said Garrett spent the weekend with Morgan & Albert in NY City.

This & That

Finally back to write a blog-Have had a bad time getting onto my blog site the past few days ? Had a busy day yesterday-To a book sale in the morning & to brother David's for his birthday in afternoon-Sister Jackie and several of her family were there also, as they happened to be in the area this weekend-Also went to breakfast with Kathy & Gary before going to David's-David and Katie will head back to Florida this next friday for the winter-He has done a nice job on the little house in the country he bought a couple years ago-She works for the Florida stae legislature & has to get back to work-
Today just goofing off, but did get to Wegmans for groceries-Groceries are going up so much, have to shop wisely, as I pretty much do all the shopping now & money is tight-
On thursday I visited the Urologist-My PSA has gone up a lot, so he figures cancer is back in the prostate-Has been ten years plus since I had the cancer, so can't complain & they said then the two months of radiation should keep it in check for ten years-Not worried at this point, he said just need to watch it doesn't get in the bones ?-
This week I will try to get to Ithaca for my old friend and co-worker's 100th birthday & then next monday to Wagner's winery for my 63rd school re-union-Try not to drive to much anymore, til I get my seizure meds straightened out-Would love to get to Jan's by the 19th, for her birthday & the her operation on the 20th-i wish her well on that-
Okay guess enough for now-Will get dinner going-Ev's breathing not real good today-

funky day

Hey it's a crazy morning. Got up late and decided to replace Ev's 50 foot of oxygen hose, which has not been done in a couple years and only once in the six years of use. Couldn't get the connector apart so called supply place & they sent a man out.
While this was going on the old 90 year old across the hall called and needed to get to the hospital right away, as they were transferring her 98 year old husband to a nursing home. During all this I wasn't dressed or shaved, but got it all done, without anyone avoiding me.
Two days ago I went to a Neurologist at Strong hospital in Rochester, as have been feeling kinda funny at times. Didn't arrive at much there & guess thru our Doctor here he is changing the meds some. Doctor here is on vacation so have to wait a couple weeks on that. Neurologist said maybe I needed to see a Psychiatrist & after all was said and done I think he needed to see one himself?? Also said he didn't think some of my spells were seizures, which they all have been treating me for?? Anyway will do as I am told for now. Oh he also said I needed to have a sleep apnea test, even though I sleep a good eight hours a night & take a good nap in the afternoon ??
Okay enough for now-Hot and humid today-

Terrible Time

Had a terrible time getting on my blog site this morning-In fact had a bad time finding anything on the internet this morning-
Very humid morning and looks like rain-Still have a funny feeling head today, but I'm sure it will go away-
Had a bad time with our neighbor-He is 98 years old and fell-Cut his head and arm bad-Called the ambulance & the took him to hospital-His wife is 90 & can't handle him during these times, which are plenty lately-He belongs in a Nursing home as he has alzheimers bad & falls at least once a week-He is very heavy to lift and bad on my back when she calls me-
While in the emergency room the nurse was trying to control him, but couldn't-I tried to help & in the process got kick hard in the stomach- So sad to see someone in that condition-Reminds me of my Mother when she lost her mind & also of Phyllis when she did-So hard to cope with people like that-Seems like half my adult life has been around sick people- I love to help, but like the hospital, they should have had some more help there.
After all that they wanted to send him home & in no way could his wife handle him-We put up a stink over that & they finally kept him-Not sure what is next for the old couple ( I call them old, but I'm not far behind )-If I get like him & live long, put me someplace please-My goal right now is to outlive Ev cause she has nothing & also needs my health insurance, plus none of her family close by to help her-
Okay enough of the old stuff, got to think young-I do dream of my younger days a lot & things I did-
My advise to all the young ones in the family-( Live each day as it comes & do what you can to make life worth living)( Do things within your means & not beyond your means )( Be honest with each other & help each other when you can)( There is no better feeling than helping someone when they are down )
A lot more could be said, but my old mind ain't to sharp this morning- I love you all so much & have been so lucky to have family like I have-

Collection Plate

A story on the news tonight reminded me of this in my past. I was a Deacon in the Reform Church in my home town for several years. On Sundays the four Deacon's took up the collection. We would pass the colection plate back and forth across each row, starting in the front row where the plates were kept near there on a table.
This one Sunday the local Postmaster, whom I worked for & was a wonderful man sat in the very back row, which was his usual spot. He was generous, great to work for, a good friend of my Dad & could be a joker at times.
Anyway the particular sunday, I was to recieve the plate when it came across the last row on my side. When it came to him in my amazement he took all the money out and put it in his suit pocket. I couldn't believe it & I had to walk up front for prayers & thank you from the Minister with an empty plate. Nothing was said, but I was red in the face I'm sure.
After Church was getting ready to close for the morning, he walked up front and dumped his pockets out and put a good amount out of his wallett with that money. Everybody got a good laugh out of it, when they realized what had happened.
Another memory of that time the minister was accused of having an affair & was asked to leave the church, which he finally did. Thru the weeks of all the hearings on this with the members & church board, I stuck up for him & said he should have another chance, but the majority didn't agree. He left the Church and got a teaching job in a city school teaching English. I was maybe wrong, but felt everybody deserved a second chance in life.

Young & in Love

A story of the past & probably told before-I was 16 going on 17 & having an affair with my school teacher, whom I later married-She lived in a village 65 miles away when on vacation-She was coming to Geneva during christmas vacation, as I remember- Geneva was 27 miles from where I lived-I took the bus to meet her there & we took in a movie & snack afterwards.
As it worked out I miss the last bus at 11 p.m. going back my way-I decided all I could do was hitch hike-I started walking and being during the war & gas rationing, very little traffic-In fact I remember only six or seven cars all night-a very cold night & some snow-
No one of the few cars would stop, so I walked all the way back to within one mile of my home town-A farmer on his way to town picked me up for the last mile, so a walk of 26 miles on a cold winter night-It took me about 7 & a half hours to do the 26 miles-I was very sore and feet blistered some-Never walked that far again in this lifetime-
Guess these are the things you do when you are young & in love-

Sorry

Sorry I have neglected my blog sight for several days-Very hot and humid today, but some rain and cooler on the way
Went to Bank, Store & out to Brother David's new home project for about an hour-He is doing a nice job on that old house, but I think he is realizing that at 66 it is wearing him out some-Also I can tell having his wife in Florida & him up here isn't a good thing- I guess she flies up this weekend for a couple weeks at least-Now he has the problem of getting someone to mow his lawn when he goes back south. The kid next door who has been doing it while he is gone is moving away-Told him if I was younger, I would, but just can't now-
Had blood work done this morning to see how my new meds are working-Won't know for two or three days on that-Not ready to give up driving yet-That one year I couldn't was a killer-
There was a bad accident out front yesterday-They drive so fast down this street, Im surprised there aren't more of them-
For anyone interested the high bank at the lake near Interlaken has thousands of fossils in it. As a child I dug out a lot of arrow heads & shells & other odd things. Not sure how many realize that fact.
Another thing I thought of this morning as I took a shower. When we lived at the lake for five months or so of the year, we always bathed in the lake. Just a cake of soap & no matter how cold, a dip in the lake. Really woke you up for the day-Also when available washed dishes with sand-

Sister Jackie 83 was taken to hospital by ambulance a couple days ago. Went home this morning & they believe her problem was a blood pressure thing and now under control.
Yesterday Cheryl, Michelle, great grandson TJ & brother David here for lunch. Good to see them all & I fed them cheese dogs, chips and potatoe salad.
Out today to pick up Oxygen, banking and groceries. Ev's portable oxygen, six of them last her about two weeks. She doesn't go out that much, so on the home concentrator all the time. That makes pure oxygen from room air.
While at the bank picked up new Arizona quarters. Never thought when they started the new quarters about ten years ago that I would be here to collect them all. Only Alaska & Hawaii left & I will have made it.
Speaking of Hawaii, I spent a couple months there when in the Navy & the most pleasant place I ever visited. Would love to visit again, but only dreaming.
Jan & George told us Morgan & Albert got moved in thier new apartment in Queens & our best to them. Jan & George here monday and gave us our new cell phone, really a neat one. Can even take pictures with it.
Can't believe all the new things in my life time. T-phones,T-V, Computers, auto transmissions in cars, cell phones & much more. To think as I was a child we had not even a phone in our house 7 when I lived some with Grandma, an outhouse.

Busy week

Had a very busy week & good to do nothing today-Ball game and picnic middle of the week, put on by the bank & graduation party for two of Ev's grand-children saturday-plus lots of company over the weekend-Getting to old for all of this-
The bank still invites us to thier annual picnic, even though no money there no more. It is held at the Doubledays ball park & ball game with that minor league team, included free.
Ev is kinda wiped out & really shouldn't be doing so much, but won't give up. Today she is mainly sleeping in her easy chair. very hard for her to lay in bed very long.
Just looked at Jan's Blog site & love her pictures she puts on it. Don't have a way to do that. Cell phone is wiped out also this week.
Have a wonderful day, all of you-

Flood

Was thinking today, as I heard more news about the floods in the midwest, about this part of my life-
In the early 1930's my Dad built a beautiful cottage on Cayuga lake. He built it up high from the water & on cribbing filled with rock & stone all done by hand. It was a wonderful place with Fireplace, Hardwood floors, three bedrooms and a modern kitchen for that era. He built it himself with of course no power tools at that time. There were very few cottages at that time along Interlaken Beach
In the summer of 1935 when I was seven years old we started to spend summers there. Sometime during that summer the area had a large flood and rained for days. Dad had an old Model T & he tried to get us out in it as the lake started to rise. All the bridges by then were washed out, so he turned around and said we would have to spend the night at the cottage. By the time we got back to the cottage the lake had gone up several feet and it was getting dark. In the room I slept in there were double bunks. He put me in the top one & at that age I was scared & watched as the water came in and covered the floor. By morning it had covered the lower bunk.
Sometime that morning the rain had stopped & Uncle Floyd came up the lake by boat to get us out & we were all glad to see him. It wasn't too many weeks and we were back staying there again and guess it dried out, with not to much damage.
Later that week we drove to Trumasburg to see the damage there. You would probably not notice today but a large creek runs under Main Street. This came over the main street and washed a good chunk of it out, along with a business and some homes along the creek.
After this flood work was done on both ends of Cayuga Lake, so this could not happen again. I remember all this as if it was yesterday. Dad sold that cottage in 1944 I believe, while I was in the Navy, Jean in the Marines & Jackie at school in Rochester.
A note about this cottage & the dock-I could not swim at that time, but fell of the dock over my head and learned the doggy paddle in a hurry. Could in later years swim for a couple miles.

Names

This may not be very interesting, but something I was thinking about as I lay in bed this morning-
As you all know I was named Robert Lyle Dickerson at birth- Since that time I have been called several names & have answered to all of them.
1-Robert-( sometimes when my Mother called me that, instead of Bob I thought I was in trouble, but her & I got along very well always as I remember & never even spanked me )
2-Bob-( My usual name from everybody )
3-Dickerson-( Always this as I played sports in High School or was called on in roll call in the Navy )
4-Dickie ( Called this forever by a Male teller in the Bank & not sure why )
5-Bobby Lyle ( By some of the girls in High School, as they learned my middle name )
6-Dick ( I guess by some, because of my last name )
7-Tricky Dick ( By some of my male friends when I had out foxed them )
8-Squirrel ( This was started by a friend of mine Mort McCheyne, as we bowled, golfed, played cards and were close friends throughout the years, he died at about 50 of cancer & never did find out the reason for him calling me that )
9-Lil Rob ( By a friend of mine Brian & guess because I had lost 4 inches in height as I grew older )
10-Dad & Grampa or Gramps ( By my Children & Grand children, which I love to hear )
11-Mr."D" ( by my Doctor, Dr. Vounas )

This is all I remember, but always answered to them thru the years, ( probably some others that I would not want to remember )

Saturday Morning

A very nice morning & in the low seventies. Nothing going on today, so probably some baseball on T-V & reading. I read about one book a week, which I guess is good for the mind.
The higher dosage of Keppra the doctor put me on, is screwing me up some. I had blood work yesterday to see what it is doing, but won't know til tuesday or wenesday. Just feel funny since going to this higher dose.
Evelyn's daughter Choen from Binghamton is coming later in the week to stay a couple nights with us. Her daughter Samantha graduates from High School friday & a party for her in Geneva on saturday. We will try to take in some of it, but very hard for us both at times. Choen has a blow up mattress to us, as we have room, but no other bed.
Talked with Brother David last night. He has the downstairs bathroom about done. The small place has two bathrooms, one with a tub and one with a shower. Also working on the kitchen. He does nice work.
Bought a new electric razor with my Father's Day gift cards & some other small things. I heard on a program on T-V that something like 20% of gift cards are never used. I sure love them' & get things I never would, that I need.

Cool Down

Hey finally cooler- Lots of storms yesterday, but did help & we needed the rain-We were both whipped after the weekend, but a wonderful weekend.
Took Ev's wheel chair back yesterday, as we use it si little & bought her a neat wheel/seat/basket Walker. Really a neat thing & should help her a lot right now.
While out rode over to Brother David's little house project in the country. His wife Katie goes back to Florida this morning, as she has to get back to work. She works for the Florida State legislature. David is doing a nice job on the home, but lots to do yet.
Good today to just goof off. Still having some problems with my new meds, but hoping they work, as I want to keep driving, at least around town.
Have a good day You All-
P.S-A nice note on my comment section from Morgan-

Friday the 13th

Woke up to kinda humid. Suppose to be hot again today. Seems to hot for early June.
Started my new seizure meds last night. Feel a little funny this morning, but as Ev said maybe need to get use to the new dose. This is the highest strength they make, so better work. Very expensive meds, about $900 for each order( 90 days ). Lucky even though I pay $537 a month for all our health insurance, with all of Ev's meds it is worth it.
Having trouble with car door. Kathy dropping off some wrenches, so maybe I can fix it, if not a trip to Waterloo. Thought I still had some socket wrenches, but like many things I gave them away when we moved I guess.
May run to the store after while & thats it for the day. Gas now $4.09/gal & it is amazing how much I use just running around town. Hopefully no more trips to Rochester for a while. Just not comfortable driving in city traffic any more. Boring being in most of the time, but things could be worse.
Old guy 98 across the hall fell yesterday. I went & helped him up and into his chair. Weighs about 220 so not an easy pick up. Can't believe she keeps him there as she is 90. He just sits and stares or sleeps all day, & never gets dressed.
Everybody be careful today, as it's friday the 13th.

Hot & Humid

Very hot & humid today-Out only for a few minutes to the dumpster-Have the air and fan both going- Suppose to be hotter here tomorrow-Oh well could be worse and five feet of snow-
Ev hurting quite a bit today & feel sorry for her-Tomorrow we both see our local Doctor here in town-Should be interesting-
Kathy called last night& talked about Father's day next sunday-Told her not to fuss, just seeing everybody is great-She said I am the Patriarch ( spelling ) of the family so we have to do something-
Nothing interesting or new to write about

Today

Very hot & humid today-Stayed in most of the day-Out for maybe an hour to store & to check out a couple apartments-Still looking for someplace without stairs to climb-None here in this complex, except for basement apartments & they are out for Evelyn due to moisture.
Watched the Belmont race and was disapointed in the favorite. Then my Yankee's brought about a stunning win in todays baseball game.
Made burgers & Ev had made a salad for dinner. Sure miss having a grill, which we can't have here.
Going to do some reading now-Started a book last night & should finish it tonight-Ev and I both do a lot of reading, which is good for the mind and soul-I read at least a book a week.
Have three fans going and the air conditioner & looks a little like rain-

Rested

After a very busy day yesterday, got a little rest today. Ev got her spine cemented in Rochester yesterday. She is suppose to take it easy for three days. She does think it helped, as not much pain so far today.
Surgeon said as long as she takes steroids for her breathing, she will probably have more fracture of the spine. After five years of Oxygen 24/7 she needs the steroids for extra help breathing
We go back to Rochester tomorrow to have dye scan of the lungs, & see if she needs more or less steroids ?
Kinda a humid day here today and have the fans on. Fixed breaded chicken breast for dinner & got a couple loads of wash done and some shopping.
A call from brother David & they had gone out in his new canoe last night. Getting a lot of work done on his summer country home. Must get out & check the place out again.
Kathy took us to Rochester yesterday & thankful for that as I still didn't feel to hot. Feel okay tonight, so should be okay for the trip tomorrow. Hate to bother anyone doing things for us, if I can help it.

Bad Day

Had a bad day. Wanted to get out to do a couple things, but had about a dozen siezures during the day. Two pretty good ones & the rest mild, but scary. Calmed down at least for a couple hours now. Very scary when they come on, as feels like electricity is going thru your body. some are more severe than others.
While I was resting Ev put a call into the doctors, for a check on this next week. Hate to do it, but know I should. Just afraid they will make me quit driving again. Oh well I must as I get older take what comes.
Want to be okay in the morning to go with Ev for her spine operation. Kathy is now going to take us I guess. Suppose to be a simple procedure, but not sure with all her other problems. We will know more tomorrow on that.
Was going out to get her some oxygen for tomorrow, but she had to call & have them deliver it. I get six of the small portable each time I go.

Picture

Just thought of something I was going to say & forgot. Can't believe that I ever looked like the picture on my blog site & here I am 80 years old. That uniform I have on, I gave to Rebecca to wear in a play she was in in High School. Also I believe the bars for my service were on the uniform. The picture was taken for the year book the year I would have graduated from ICS and was a full page one in that year book. Guess that was because I was the only boy to leave school & serve in WW-2 from that class ??
I think I have told this, but I did finish High School in Ithaca at the age of twenty.

Lazy Day

Lazy day today. Did get to Wegmans for some goods. Woke up feeling lousy & a good headache. Looked rainy all day, but nothing yet. Had our usual sausage & waffles for sunday morning. Spent $85 at the grocery store and gas pump. Can't believe how much more all things are now. Hope somebody in the good old USA can straighten things out some. Wonder how people today could handle a depression like I grew up in. I look back & I think it was good old FDR who straightened things out back then.
At fourteen I was working in a restaurant & grocery store, so had my own spending money. Got fifty cents each morning before school cleaning up the restaurant before it opened, then in the summer worked for a dollar a day and a dollar and a half on saturdays in a grocery store. Then found a better deal in the canning factory for 25 cents an hour the following summer.
Know a lot of people out of work at the time, but always something out there if you looked hard enough. Dad was lucky and had a pretty good secure job, but nothing extra most of the time. He worked two jobs most of the time to make ends meet, as he was a very good carpenter.
Hope somehow things get back to better for the younger generation. I feel blessed that my family are doing okay and good jobs, so I don't worry to much about thier future. Just the big thing today is the countries debt which my children & grand children will have to deal with.
Okay enough of the for today. The beginning of the week & may it be a good one for us all-

Michelles Blog

Finally after a couple hours I found Grand-daughter Michelles new Blog site for thier new business. If interested, it is (http://backyardoriginals.blogspots.com ). The doors are great and well worth buying, if you need one.
Shell works at school and said she got bit breaking up a fight today in school. It bled and I advised her to see a Doctor soon, as she might need a shot. They are very busy with this new business, with thinga at two sites. The WindMill in PenYann & a store in Horseheads. I wish them lots of luck on thier venture.
Doing little today. At this age I take a nap if home in the afternoon. Did get out to the store for a few minutes after lunch. Talked to Brother David on the phone & he is busy working on his little house out by Aurora. His wife Katie flies in tomorrow to be with him for a couple weeks. Lots of work for him out there as the inside was in bad shape. Drove up from home in florida with his two dogs. Not sure how long he will stay this time.

Evie Ann

Ev got word today that they will cement her spine on June 3rd. Hopefully this will relieve some of the pain-
Just goofing off the past couple days. tried to touch up scratches on car. Guess they gave me the wrong paint, as it looks like H---. Oh well the car runs good and gets us where we need be. Did go out last night to Tom Thumb ice cream place for a cone.
Oh boy dinner is ready-

Car & Gas

Car finally passed inspection today-Was getting worried as only a few more days before June 1st-So I am thankful for this being solved-
As I said yesterday gas was above $4.00 all over Rochester-Today filled up here for $3.89- I think gas was about 20 cents a gallon when I first started drivin in 1942-But only could make about a dollar a day at most ordinary jobs, so guess if you compare it's not so bad- Only thing is people didn't travel so much, or so far as today-In fact the last two weeks I have spent over $30 to go back and forth to get car inspection passed & $30 a trip to Rochester & back each time-
Oh well hope it doesn't go much higher, or will have to stay home-

tough couple days

Had a hard time getting on my blog site tonight ? -Tough couple of days, with a trip to rochester & back both days-
Ev had to see one Doctor there yesterday & a different one today-Also had to deliver MRI films to Strong Hospital to another Doctor who will try to cement her spine fractures-Probably do that soon-
It takes us about three & a half hours driving time up and back, so very tiring for an old guy like me-
I do know without a doubt that the if not for a couple of the Doctors up at Strong she would not be here today-
Now we wait out to here from the new Doctor she has at Strong when he will do her spine- They also put her on another script today to try to counteract some of the bone damage the breathing steroids are doing-It is all kind of a no win situation-
Tomorrow I must go see if I can finally get the old car to pass inspection- Must get it before next weekend, or no more driving it-Gas all over the area today finally hit $4.00-

monday night

Another frustrating day. Went to the garage in Waterloo & car will still not pass inspection. They said to drive it for rest of the week & then they would check again. Have two weeks to go, so if it doesn't pass will have to park it, I guess.
On the way out of Seneca Falls I checked with our old place we lived to see if they had any ground floor apartments. Evelyn just can't take the seven steps here anymore. More expensive there, so don't know what to think about it.
After seeing surgeon in Rochester on wenesday, hopefully we will be in a better position to look ahead. Hate to see it get to the point where Ev can't get out.
Very cold here tonight for this time of year. Brother David got in with his two dogs from Florida to his summer home in Aurora. Lots of problems for him there to take care of. I think his wife comes up in a few weeks.
Talked to Morgan at her parents tonight. Her and her boyfriend came up to stay a couple days. I picked on her about getting married & probably should not have.
Okay Good Night to All

Sunday night

Rained here today-Choen & Tim here for dinner, Choen's birthday-had a good visit-His Mother died this week, so good for him he said to get away from things in Binghamton.
Hope to get car to pass inspection tomorrow. Having a bad time with it & very frustrating, as it seems to run perfect.
Ev's nephew here last night for dinner & a visit. He leaves for Spain on thursday to work in a hotel there for the summer. This is part of his college work & gets credits for it. Says he wants to move to Spain when he graduates.
Very busy weekend and am wiped out about now.

School Board

An afternoon in 1956 two Mother's from up the street came down to talk with me. They asked if I would consider running for the local school board. I thought it over & talked it over for a few days & decided to go for it.
I ran for a three year term & won by several votes. I served on that board for a total of 9 years.
The last ofthose years I was elected President of the Board.
At that time the State Education Dept. contacted us and wanted to know if we would consider merging into one district with Ovid & Romulus. I set up a meeting, which I chaired between the three School Boards to discuss that. After a couple hours of pros & cons the Romulus board walked out. At that point I thought this might not be a good idea, as it wouldn't be big enough to be of much benefit to the children. Also afraid of what it might do to the Villages.
We were then pressured by the State to set up a public vote & did so. The issue passed by 4 votes. A few of us who had second thoughts found that 12 people voted that were not eligible. We took this, with a lawyer we had hired to the State Supreme court & also to a hearing before the Commisioner of Education in Albany. In both cases we lost our appeal & we were ticked as only our lawyer could speak at the hearings.
In 1968 the Merger became a fact & I ran for that Board & won a three year term. The two schools were allowed to hold seperate graduations that year & I had the privledge of presenting my daughter Jan her diploma. She was also Valedictorian of her class & gave a very nice speech to her class.
The first order of business was to pick a name and after much discussion we picked South Seneca, which it is today. All of this was quite an experience & I learned a lot from it. I still feel Interlaken was hurt bad by the Merger & went down hill after losing the High School to Ovid.
One memory of the old Interlaken School Board was a year I was appointed to negotiate with the teachers a contract. The negotiater for the teachers was the teacher who had kick me off the basketball team in High school when he caught me smoking. All in all it came out good and they said one of the best contracts ever for both sides.
Guess thats enough for now on this subject-

today

Finally got Evelyn out for a couple hours today. She is paying for it tonight. We went to lunch at Doug's Fish Fry in Skeanatules ( spelling ? ). Then a couple places where she managed to get around with her cane only. I finally got her script from Doctors which we have tried for all week. Had to get a new type of drug.
Got thru to Car dealer today about getting car passed for inspection. They had to get a part before it could pass & they haven't made that car since 2003. Kinda expensive they say to fix, but the good old tax rebate will pay for that I hope.
Next week we go to Rochester to Spine Surgeon. No surgeon in Syracuse will touch her & not sure from what the one in Rochester said before, if he will do anything. All are afraid because of all her background history.
Forgot one thing in my Navy story the other day.& I'm sure a lot more that comes to me as I think about it. When I was to get my ship in SanFrancisco I decided to call home that morning & had to be at the designated pier at noon. I was a long time on the phone & realized I would miss my ship & be in deep Do-Do. I paid a taxi driver $20 to get me there on time and what a ride we took over the bridge & to the pier with minutes to spare. $20 was a lot then as we were only paid $27 per month, but I still had three dollars left. They were just getting ready to raise the gangway.

Mother's day

Happy Mother's day to all the Mothers out there. Got to tell this, as it always comes back to me on Mother's Day-
When my Mother was in the Nursing home and very bad, I got a call from the home one morning, after her being there five years. They said they didn't believe she would make it thru that day. I went right down there and spent the day with her. I held her hand a lot and watch her slowly slip away. I was with her as she died and even though very sad, it was wonderful to be there & say I loved her as she went away. Probably one of the greatest gift I ever got from a wonderful Mother whom I loved so much.
I prayed a lot that day & talked to her, even though I'm not sure she could hear me. In some ways, although she could not talk & had her eyes closed I feel she did hear me. I thank God for this gift of letting me be with her.

busy day

Off in a bit to get work done on our good old 6 year old car. They tell me it needs quite a bit before it will pass inspection this month, so kinda dreading whats ahead today. Have put so much into it this past year, so can't give up on it.
Had to put a new lock on our door yesterday, as it wouldn't stay locked good. They brought one over, but I put it on as I like to keep busy when I can. Harder to do things like that with my shaking, but want to as long as I can. That was our excitement for yesterday.
Some of Ev's kids coming for Mother's day & I will make some kind of dessert. Don't see to much of them, so it will be a treat for Evelyn.
Okay nothing exciting going on, still waiting for some news from Doctor. Talked with brother David & he will be up here about Memorial day to work on his summer home.

Navy Days

Jan & Sandi said, now that my Navy picture is on the Blog site, I should write about those days. I will attempt this, but try not to make it to long, as there are many things I could write that would matter little.
I was a senior in High School & was in the lead part in two plays put on by the High School music teacher. This changed my life, and her and I got involved & serious about each other. She being 23 & me 16. This became more & more of a problem as time went on.
That summer her older brother was killed in WW-2. When I became 17 that fall, I decide I must join the Navy & help the cause. That also would calm down the problems of our relationship. Later after leaving the Navy in 1946 we were married. She was still teaching, so I was just working part time, I and a buddy decided to go to Ithaca High School and finish school. This we did and then both went to a so called War College in Binghamton. I took Electrical engineering while there.
After joining the Navy I was sent to Sampson Navy base for basic training & 12 weeks of electrical school. The basic training was tough but a good thing for me at that time & made a better person of me.
After leaving Sampson & a weeks leave I was sent by train to Treasure Island, a Navy base near San Francisco. this was to wait to be assigned to a ship.
The war with Japan was going strong & we were to be sent to the Phillipine Islands to take part in the re-taking of it from the Japanese & then on to the invasion of Japan itself. While on the way we had engine trouble and had to spend a time in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor for repairs. This was a good experience and saw a lot of Hawaii.
I remember going out of San Francisco bay, under the Golden Gate bridge & past Alcatraz island & pretty scared as a 17 year old kid.
When we finally got to our destination off the Phillipines, I was transfered to a smaller repair ship. While on that ship I repaired motors and generators of ships that had been damaged in battle. We mainly saw some, but very little action & just some submarine attempts to knock us out. Another problem was floating mines all over the Pacific, put there by the Japanese.
During this time the US dropped two Atomic Bombs on Japan & they before long surrendered.
This saved us invading Japan and an estimated loss of half million Americans, we were told, Japan was tough & did not give up easily. As we heard the news on the ships intercom we had no idea what an Atomic Bomb was & what it could do.
After the War was over I was assingned to some shore duty on the island of Samar & Manicani. There were still a lot of Japs in the jungle who refused to give up. While there I became friendly whith a family and had several visits with them in thier large thatched hut. Ate with them several times, a meal of raw fish & rice, sitting on the floor on at a rough wooden table. Found out you could eat raw fish if it came from salt water. They even ate the eyes ( yuk ). They had a daughter who taught and could speak English well, so learned a lot of thier customs and culture.
While there I ran into three old school buddies from our little town of 750 souls.
After a while I was transfered to a Floating Dry Dock ( ABSD-1 ) which was the first of its kind in the world & very large. I helped in dismantiling it to be towed home in ten seperate sections. While on the Dry Dock I became good friends with a guy my age, whom I still keep in contact today.
I was next transferred to a smaller repair ship USS Proserpine which would take us home. Before leaving the area we dumped all our electrical & mechanical supplies in the ocean. We were told this was so it wouldn't effect the US economy by being brought back to the States??
Don't remember to much of the return home trip, as I was excited, I guess to be going home. We ran into a typhoon and one ship in our convoy was lost and many drowned. We went home by the way of Alaska & not sure why. Down the coast from there to San Francisco & by train across country to Lido Beach Long Island. I was discharged there & made my way into NY City to Grand Central staion and train home to Ithaca, NY.
A great experience & something you can never forget. I thank God for getting me thru it safely & for my long life since.

picture

A busy day, fun day. Jan & George here for a while. Then Ev's grand-daughter & boyfriend came and brought dinner. Good to see them all.
George set me up with my Navy picture on this Blog site. Can't believe I looked like that once years ago. I had tried several times to put a picture of some kind in the site, so anyway I thank him for doing it.
Just finished watching a Yankee ball game I had taped. Now will do some reading & probably fall asleep.

refer to tuesday

I wrote tuesday of the things I miss as I grow older. I spoke of not spending more times with my girls as they grew, but left out someone. Jim my stepson was as much of a son to me , as a son could be. Although we do a lot I regret also not doing more with him as he grew.
Lazy day today. Did a couple loads of wash and ran the cleaner throughout. Read some & fixed a fish dinner. Still waiting for a call from surgeon in Rochester. Our Doctor may try for a good one in Syracuse. Kinda dread that as I don't like driving in Syracuse, but will if neccesary.
Raining here & still cold tonight. Ev and I talking today about cheecking out a possible look for a handicap type apartment with no stairs ?? So hard for her, as I'm sure I have said doing the seven steps.
Good night & God Bless You All ( sleep tight ).

Wenesday

Hi you all-Went on the deck today to work on a flower box. Saw a mess on the floor and railing from bird droppings, then turned and looked & a robin was trying to build a nest in a wreath that I had hung on the apartment wall. Had seen him out there on the railing, but never dreamed he would try to build in that inner circle of the small wreath. Had to clean things up & take the wreath down for now. Felt sorry for the bird, but couldn't have the mess. Hopefully dear miss Robin will find a new home to lay her eggs.
Took Evelyn for bone density scan today. They let me go in and watch the thing in progress & very interesting. I saw where her two new spine fractures are & asked the lady tech if that was what I was seeing. She said she couldn't say, but shook her head yes. Our Doctor here is very concerned and trying to get her into a spine surgeon as soon as possible.
Before writing this I had a bad time trying to get in to write a new post. Dumb me found I was using the wrong password after about 30 minutes of trying. I get so frustrated at times with these new things, like computers, cell phones & so on. Don't laugh but life was easier before cars, phones, computers, television, & all the other new gadgets. ( Good old horse and buggy days ). Now that should cause some comments ??
Good night & sleep tight-

tuesday night

Watching a yankee ball game, but kinda boring. Was thinking today as summer approaches, the things I miss. My girls as they grew & not spending more time with them. My summer cottage of years ago, which I was forced to sell due to medical bills in the sixties. My home on main street in Interlaken, that was suppose to be my retirement home. Fishing & golf, which I was pretty good at. My riding lawn mower & like fishing it was relaxing. Some would think that statement crazy.
I also was thinking I have moved 21 times, & that might be missing one or two. We talk of moving again from here, to get away from the stairs, which are very hard for Evelyn. Dread the thoughts of doing that though at this point.
Another thing I was good at and miss is bowling. I at one time had the highest game ever bowled in Trumamsburg. Had ten straight strikes and then a spare.
After my thinking, I have to remember I'm very lucky to still be alive & to have experienced all these things. Another thing that is gone is being able to travel, but have good memories of those times.
Tomorrow Ev goes for a bone scan, to see what the steroids are doing to her bones, I guess. From what they say the steroids are what probably is causing the spine fractures. Hopefully while there we will find out what the next step is for her.
Okay enough for now, & will get back to the ball game-

The Week

This is monday & the beginning of a new week. Last week went by fast and quite interesting. i was doing the washing downstairs on monday & as I went to get the clothes at ten p.m., the phine rang. It was the 90 year old neighbor lady & said she was bleeding bad. I rushed over & she sure was. There were pools of blood all over & a mess of blood on the rugs. A vien in her leg had ruptured it looked like. I wrapped it with a towel and called 911. They arrived in about 5 minutes & after the day in the hospital she came home all bandaged up.
On thursday we headed to Ithaca to pick up some MRI films for Evelyn to take to back surgeon in Rochester. After picking them up we decided to try to find the nursing home where my dear friend Dorothy Wickes was staying. She will be 100 in a three months & I worked with her for several years. She was also a dear friend of my Mother's. After running around for an hour we found the place & had a good visit with her. Although confined to wheelchair, or bed her mind was very good and we talked a lot about the past. This took a lot out of Evelyn & was good of her to go along with my seeing Dorothy.
We are now waitng to find out when we can see the surgeon in Rochester, as Evelyn is in a lot of pain most of the time. Our family Doctor is working on this & will hopefully have answers tomorrow.
I had a surprise over the weekend, as my seizures returned. I take meds for that & usually is under control. Just scary when it happens as I am out of it if they are severe, & luckily only one was. Hopefully that was it & no more. we did little over the weekend because of that. Evelyn's grand-daughter came on friday & took her thru the Mall in her wheelchair, which was a treat for her.
Have been watching baseball games at night all week, my Yankee's. All for now from and old retired Dad & Grampa-

Hi
This is a site I have set up to write about my past and present, as I get older. I do this for my wonderful family ( my Children & Grandchildren ) & friends. I hope it is of some interest & I will try to write on it as often as possible. For now it is late & just wanted to get it set up & working.
Love to You All
